Desert Echoes Flute Project (DEF Project, for short), located in the Phoenix metro area, is Arizona’s largest and most active flute ensemble organization. What started in 2006 as an intimate gathering of flute lovers has since grown to include three year-round flute ensembles and a multitude of flute education and performance opportunities for student and adult players alike.
In addition to our five concerts each year at our home stage in Mesa, AZ, we have played at The San Francisco International Flute Festival, the renowned Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, the International Low Flutes Festival, and for numerous community events around Phoenix. In 2023, all three of our performance ensembles were chosen to perform at the National Flute Association Convention.
But we’re more than just ensemble groups, we’re a community of musicians from all walks and stages of life who have come together to share the joy of music and life together. We’re friends. We’re colleagues. We’re from all levels — from professional players to students to hobbyist adults.
Our common bond? We all love to play the flute.
DEF Project and Mesa Community College co-sponsor educational events for students and adult performers alike. Past programs have included masterclass opportunities with renowned guest artists, preparation classes for AMEA Regional Auditions, and summer intensive experiences.
